May Memories...                                   by Mark Clark

May is a month of interesting memorials. Cinco de Mayo reminds us of the freedom of Mexico. Mother’s Day celebrates our maternal parent. Memorial Day gives us pause to remember those who have died in the armed services of our nation.

Memorial Day has interesting roots. It became a national day of observance in 1868 by declaration of General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Its roots actually go back to the compassion of the ladies of the South. During the Civil War they would place flowers on the graves of those who had died in battle, both Confederate and Union alike. They chose to show respect to the fallen as surrogate mothers, sisters, and wives.

Over the years the observance of the holiday has lost some of its significance. Remembrance has given way to meals, races, and long weekends. Sacrifice has been left in the dust of graduation and vacation plans. But some still remember.

Floral arrangements and flags will be placed with loving care. Families will pause to consider empty chairs. Comrades will remember. A nation is preserved.

At Lake Aurora we are busily finishing preparations for camp. In a few short weeks kids will flow in and lives will be changed. Jesus will be encountered, loved, and accepted. His sacrifice will be remembered and commemorated. Their changed lives will be a living memorial of His sacrifice.
